Clue #5 Questions...
Who is Effie waiting for?
I think she is waiting God to tell her the next location. When the thunder and singing happened, I think this is when God answered her prayer and is telling her the next location. I say this because after few days Effie left and I'm pretty sure she has went to tell some other people about the message of God. It might not to be directly sent but Neil has realized there is someone that is important that Effie is waiting for.
This story contains a lot of Christ imagery. Write down three seperate sentences from the story that might symbolize Jesus and explain why Timothy Findely might have written these into his story.
Can non-Christian authors reveal truth about God's world? Yes, because for example scientists tries to solve the whole creation and everything but they come up with the solution that there is a being that is massive but doesn't want to admit the being is God. In this way, I think non-Christian authors can reveal truth about God's world. They would have heard stories about the Christian world. The Bible being such an interesting book, I think authors would try to use the elements in the Bible to write their own books.

Clue #5
What is the theme of "About Effie"?
I think the theme has to be with Jesus and the people. Effie is like Jesus and is trying to tell us (Neil) the message of God. The one who Effie is waiting is God and "He" comes to tell Effie where to go next. Using my interpertation I think the theme is saying to be ready for the one who will come suddenly and when the one is gone, you won't have the chance to change it back.
Find a verse from the Bible that relates to the theme of "About Effie" and include it in your written response. John 3:16 describes the theme of "About Effie" the best. What I thought the theme was how Jesus has given a chance to be forgiven but the ones who denies it will go to hell. Effie is like Jesus, who came suddenly, expectedly just like any other human but was loving and caring. Always had a contact with this "someone" which in my prediction is God. Jesus would always pray to God and talk to God.

Clue #4 Questions...
What specific clues can setting reveal about the theme of a short story?
Depending on the setting the theme could clarified by the mood or the weather. Such as if the author tells us the weather is cold, we can imagine people having their hands together and trying to warm it up. If the theme is loneliness, saying it was the middle of fall could be another clue for readers. These specific clues helps us understand the story better and know what the author is trying to tell us.
How does an author drop clues about characters and how their actions lead you the theme of a story? Authors uses the background of each character to show us how they feel about certain things and gives us clues of action that we can predict. The author tells us the characteristics of each character and lets us know what they will do. Even the mood or the way each character talks gives us clues of what the theme is. Throughout the story the author lets us think about the theme and at the end it is their job to let us know what the theme is. In order to do that, there should be alot of clues and definitely alot of speaking that envolves relation to the theme.
What is the strongest setting you have ever encounted in your own life (the place that has impacted you the most). Describe this place and ponder if God revealed anything about Himself or His truth in this place. Well for me I have been in China most of life but on the contrary the strongest setting wasn't China. This is my second year living in Korea and I have been going through alot of things that I couldn't imagine. My strongest setting was having to survive TCIS life. Getting to know more friends, knowing the dorm rules and getting good academic grades were pretty frustrating. Well what I really learned was that with God nothing is hard.

Clue #4
Who is a "character" in your life (a real-life person) you admire? Why do you admire this person?(Be specific and name the traits you admire)
Someone who I really admire is someone who live a really happy life with God. There isn't anyone who I can think of but for me, I just want to live a life I wouldn't regret. I want to do all the things I wanted to do and give love to as much as people as I can. The reason I admire this kind of a person is because it just gives me the idea of freedom and happiness. Many people with alot of money aren't happy. I think it is because they haven't met God yet. I want to show people near me how you can live happily with less money but with God. God is always there no matter what happens.

Clue #3 Questions....
How can you figure out a theme in a short story? Describe the process.
How I figure a theme in a short story is by looking at the text and the resolution of the story. Mostly, the message is at the endling and by looking at the last message and the story I find the real message the author is trying tell us. First of all, I read the short story. Second, I discover what the whole story is trying to tell us. Then I connect it due to what humanity tend to do. Then concluding everything I make it in to a theme/theme statement. Through themes/theme statements I get to understand the story better. In addition, if I feel really connected I like to write it on paper or write it on my wall. These theme/theme statements helps us to realize how humanity act and gives us lessons of life.
What is the theme of "The Utterly Perfect Murder" and how does this theme relate to your own life? I think the theme of this story is friendship. The author is trying to tell us that Doug didn't really want to kill Raulph, he was just wondering how Raulph was doing. This shows how friendship is really important to life. I really had hard times with friendship and I would always hear from my mom that I am the one who has to be humble. It is me who have to forgive them whenever there is a conflict between me and a friend. Grown up a little bit I really got to know how friendship is really complicated and important to keep. Especially girls are very complicated in friendship and being an girl I had alot of conflicts. I think this author is trying to tell us keep our friendships because later on you will never know that friend was really important. There is an saying that when you don't want to do something, you can't hide from it so just do your best on it. I think it is the same thing for friendship. When you fight with someone, you will have to deal with it anyway so just do your best on it.
How is a moral of story different from a theme?
Moral is more of a life lesson and theme is the main idea the story surrounds. Moral is what readers learn after reading the book. That is why people say when you read alot of books, you get wiser. It is through the moral that people learn and write wonderful essays with. I think the main reason people tend to read books is because they like reading or they want to gain wisdom through the moral. Getting to know more morals it is helpful in social life too. You get to use you life lessons and impress people around you. Theme is more like an idea. An idea that leads the story and the topic of the story. I think themes helps us understand the whole story and it is an tool to lead us to make an theme statement.
Read John 3:16. Is this a theme statement for God's story? How does this relate to the truth you might find in literature. As an Christian, John 3:16 is like the main theme. In this verse it shows how much God loves us and the way to get eternal life with God. I think the love of God is the main point of everything in God's story. I think throughout the whole Bible, God has been trying to tell us he loves us so much that it is unmeasurable. Through that love he has given us his only son to give us eternal life. Whenever I read books of Christian authors, they tend to send that message too to the readers. Even non believers such as CS Louis, he wasn't Christian but had a imagery of the sacrafice Jesus did and the ressurection Jesus had. Many books around us has images of God in the books. Until now I have found alot of connections with God in different books. I have realized that many authors send the wonderful message of God by writing books.

Clue #3
What is a literary theme? Provide an explanation and then 3 one-statement examples of a literary theme that reveals truth about the universal human experience.A theme is the main idea the story surrounds and gives an statement due to humanity. Themes can help you understand the message of the story and analyze the story. These are some theme statements that I thought were interesting...
1.The choices you make in life can help overcome struggles
2.Like a house without a roof is incomplete, a man without trust is incomplete too.
3.Hardship can make or break friendship/relationships.
What is the theme of your life, as you see it right now?
The theme of my life is music. The theme statement of my life is "No matter what happens, everything is what God has planned so I should find the good out of it". These two themes has been around my life so far and have always lived with it. Whenever I think of my theme statement, I always get strength from it when I went through hard times. My life was pretty tough but now through God my life changed 360 degrees being really happy.
In your opinion, what is the theme of God's plan for this world?
Pesonally as a Christian I am not really sure but I think someday Jesus will come to Earth destroying everything. We all will go to heaven and get judged. God's plan for this world will be...Love. God loved this world so much that he sent his only son to save us from dying because of our sins. Through his love we were able to live and were given a chance to have eternal life with God

Clue 6 Questions
Why do authors use figurative language?
Authors use figurative language to give more imagination to the reader and add more imagery to the story. Giving more imagery to the reader they can understand the story and be hooked to the story. I think using figurative language is another tool for authors to hook their readers. Being hooked can let the readers be commited to finish the book, so for authors it is an give and take deal. When any reader finishes the book, that books will be passed on which gives authors the benefit of being famous. Some authors that just want people read his/her books will have the benefit of knowing how people like his/her writing. Personally, reading figurative language is pretty confusing for me because it is totally different from how we talk and speak. Giving imagery and everything is very interesting but these languages can be a total confuse for readers. I just want to say that the effect could be the opposite of what the author thinks. In conclusion, figurative language is helpful in giving imagery but could be a confusion to readers.
List 3 metaphors that you think are really beautiful or interesting.
Find a metaphor for Jesus in the Bible and list the Bible verse.
Mathew 5:13"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men." This is a verse that Jesus tells us in Mathew telling us to be salt of the earth. Which means to be an important person in role of doing God's work so that people will follow us believing Jesus. Before us, Jesus is already the salt of the earth. Without Him we couldn't have gotten forgiveness of our sins and because of His love we are able to get eternal life. Loving us so much God was able to sacrafice His only son to die on the cross. Jesus having to go through the pain, loved us so much that he was borned to die for us. After that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to stay with us instead of Jesus. This whole packet, I like to call it the "Trinity Love Packet". Trinity meaning the Holy Spirit, Jesus and God loving us so much giving this big packet of the Bible, love and their forgiveness.
What does this metaphor reveal about God's world and your understanding of it?
This metaphor shows how Jesus is the light of the world and He is always there for us in the dark. My understand of the metaphor above is Jesus telling us we should be like Jesus and try to like him. One the steps would be being a salt of the earth. Something that has to be there for people just like Jesus. We should be there for those who want to believe in Jesus but are confused of their beliefs. We shouldn't loose our saltiness and keep going on because once you are un salty, you can't be used again. In my interoperation the salt is our faith and cooker is God. When we loose faith we can't be used anymore but by gaining more faith, we can be servants of God again. It is just like when the chef thinks the food has no flavor, he/she will put more salt to make it taste good. The food is been given a another chance of being delicious. Just like God always gives us grace.

List 3 metaphors that you think are really beautiful or interesting.
- "You are the sun in my sky". I really thought this metaphor is interesting because I realized how I always think if someone or something makes my day, I say "you are the sun in my sky" to my self. Most of the time my sun is singing or God showing me everyday how much He loves me. Not only God and singing but also people around such as my family and my lovely friends are the sun in my sky too.
- "She is my East and my West, my compass". This one particularly I thought it was beautiful. This reminded of those romantic movies when they say these phrases that is really romantic and makes us (woman) 's heart melt. It is just so romantic that you can't do anything about it and this metaphor reminded me of one of those phrases thats shows how much the guy loves his wife/girlfriend.
- "Love is a fragile flower opening to the warmth of Spring". This one I just thought there was some kind of moral to it. How I interoperated it was that loving is really painful and needs alot of patience but after all these effort, the result is being an beautiful couple or in this case, flower. More of a extension to this was that nothing can be done without effort.

Reflect on a book or a story you had read recently and what new truth about the world you have learned from that narrative.
Recently in writing class, we have read "Alex and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day". In this book Alex, the main character, is having a very bad day. From the morning the author tells us all these details of representing a very bad day. What I learned from that book was that everybody has bad days. We do not have the bad day for forever. It is just 24 hours and we are done with it and with your surrounding people there is an possibility to have a very good day. I learned it is not only me who have a bad day so it is me who have to change it to a good day. Then I got realized everything in world such as making a friend, getting a job, making a bad day a good day is all my responsibility. It is me who have to make a friend, get a job and change the mood of the day in to a positive mood. This book told me there is nothing done without effort.

Putting you into the character's perspective can help us make connections to the character. All these can show us the truth about the real world that we live in.
Why is it important for you to interact/ connect with literature?
Interacting with literature can help us through our whole life. Reading books can help us gain knowledge and wisdom. Communicating and having social life is involved in reading alot of books. You gain wisdom of what to say to give an good impression . This is especially helping when you meet people for work. Reading research papers about famous literature can help you in talking with professcors so that the professcor will remember you. For some people, reading could be alot of fun and especially when they connect with books it could be like they are the character in the story. There is a saying even though you don't go to school, if you read alot of books it is equal to those who go to school. That is how important literature is. No matter you try not to read, there isn't a exit from reading literature.
Clue #1
What is beauty?
Beauty is a present in a thing or a person that shows an certain pleasure. Beauty can be shown by the heart or by some appearance. Humanity tend to think about the appearance but God does not. God only looks at the heart not the appearance so no matter how many stickers, how fat you are, it doesn't matter in His eyes. The heart for Jesus is the most important so for me, beauty is the heart for the Lord.
